This section of the public clearly isn't going to care about how secure a site is, they simply don't trust eCommerce to be secure. What that figure does show, however, is the level of distrust in eCommerce that exists. At present, only half of internet users actually use eCommerce websites to buy goods. That represents a massive market who are very possibly visiting your website but who aren't buying anything because of security issues. Most of the other half of internet users, those who do buy online, know how to see if a site is secure, but only if that information is made clear to them. This is why having a professionally designed eCommerce website with a secure online payment system (shopping cart) is worth the investment; it doesn't matter how much traffic you get to a site, if it isn't being converted to paying customers then it might as well not exist. Security is quite rightly a major factor when consumers choose where to purchase goods online. If your website doesn't have up-to-date security measures built into its shopping cart as well as highly visible information making this instantly clear to visitors then you're not going to be converting anywhere near as much traffic as you could be.
